Iskeroon’s GPS coordinates are N:51º 45.912′ W:010º 08.725′.
Iskeroon is on the Ring of Kerry, between Waterville and Caherdaniel. We are 30 miles from Kenmare (1 hour’s drive) and 50 miles from Killarney (1 hour 45 mins).
Almost exactly midway on the road between Waterville and Caherdaniel you will come to The Scarriff Inn, a large red pub, standing on its own and impossible to miss. Immediately beside this pub is a road leading down the hill, and a signpost pointing to Bunavalla Pier. (There is also a sign for Moran’s Farmhouse B&B.) Take this road all the way to the bottom, heading for the pier. There are some hairpin bends along the way, some with side roads leading off them. Ignore these side roads and stick to the main road – you are aiming down the hill for Bunavalla Pier and the harbour.
Near the bottom of the hill is a final hairpin bend and on the telegraph pole opposite you as you approach the bend there is a sign saying Iskeroon. Swing left at this hairpin bend, following the direction of the arrow on the sign.
(This is the place where people sometimes make a mistake and drive straight on, missing the bend. If you do this, don’t worry. You will come to some abandoned yellow buildings – turn around at the buildings, retrace your steps and bear right at the fork in the road.)
When you reach Bunavalla Pier you will see a road to the left with stone pillars on either side. There is a sign on the right hand pillar saying “Private Entrance, No Through Road, Iskeroon”. Take this road, which is unpaved, and keep driving, beside the beach on your right and then through two white gate posts. Iskeroon is at the end of this lane.
It is much easier than it looks on paper. The key is to aim for the harbour. Once you get to the pier, turn left into the only road there is, and keep driving: it’s that simple.
Directions from Shannon:
Head for Limerick, then take the tunnel, which is tolled. Take the N21 to Killarney; you will drive through Adare and Newcastle West and Abbeyfeal. Just after Kerry Airport, turn left onto the Killarney / Tralee road and then take the first right for Killorglin, Glenbeigh, Cahirciveen and Waterville (N70). This is the Ring of Kerry. The Scarriff Inn is five miles beyond Waterville.
Directions from Cork:
Follow the signs to Killarney/ Tralee (N22); you will drive through Macroom and Ballyvourney. Shortly after the Cork/Kerry boundary, the wide road sweeps down a hill. The turn off for Kenmare is marked on the road itself, watch out for this and take the turning left for Kenmare (R569). Drive through Kenmare’s one way system and take the N70 for Sneem, Caherdaniel and Waterville.
